SYNOPSIS:
They are icons in their cities and their collections represent the cultural identities of nations. These world-renowned museums are in constant negotiation with changes in the world. Every year, millions of visitors’ queue to view the treasures that hang on their gallery walls. In this eight-part documentary series, THE ART OF MUSEUMS, we encounter museums as living, breathing, beings: characters who have stories and face challenges. Together with art lovers like Vivienne Westwood, Marina Abramović, Ólafur Elíasson and Wolfgang Joop, our audience encounters some of the most powerful masterpieces in the world—and experiences just how alive these museums are...
THE ART OF MUSEUMS is not a classic documentary series about galleries displaying dusty old paintings. These films trace the turbulent and exciting biographies of each museum, from their survival of wars to their visions for the future. Despite being state symbols, they are nonetheless often in conflict with the politics of their respective countries. The Prado in Madrid, for example, faced bombing by Franco’s troops during the Spanish Civil War.
To this day, a host of conservators maintain and cherish the rescued works of art as a gesture of detachment from Spain’s dictatorial past.
The museums have witnessed fierce battles and great triumphs. Their lives are full of intrigue, hope and celebration—moments inscribed in their histories. We tell these stories through a multitude of perspectives, from exclusive archive material to interviews with museum directors and celebrities. Not to mention the internationally renowned hosts, who come face to face with the masterpieces of European cultural history and tell us their tales:
- Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum | New York | United States of America
Artist Julie Mehretu encounters the masterpieces ‘Composition VIII‘ by Kandinsky, ‘Alchemy‘ by Pollock, ‘Study for Portrait of Chess Players‘ by Duchamp - Museo del Prado | Madrid | Spain

The series is accompanied by art historian Dr. Matt Lodder, a lecturer at the University of Essex, who reveals little-known anecdotes behind the paintings and contextualises the lives of the museums. He has set himself a goal: to convey art, as clearly and transparently as possible, always emphasising its proximity to real life.
